THE OPPORTUNITY

Georg Fischer Harvel LLC is an industry-leading manufacturer of PVC and CPVC piping systems, thermoplastic duct systems and machining stock extrusions. Since 2010, Georg Fischer Harvel has enlisted the help of Entergy Arkansas' Large Commercial & Industrial Program representatives to explore and implement methods for achieving long-term electricity savings.

THE PROJECT

Staff at Georg Fischer Harvel LLC recognized that their overall manufacturing process had changed so much that they might be able to improve energy efficiency by adjusting the design of the chiller plant. Program representatives analyzed the facility - which was designed to house 100 injection-molding machines, but currently houses 23 machines - and determined that a resizing could result in significant energy savings.

THE RESULTS

By shutting down a large cooling tower, upgrading process equipment, replacing a number of pumps and fans and installing a high-efficiency SMARDT Chiller, Georg Fischer Harvel LLC resized the chiller plant to accommodate the machines currently in use and achieved an energy savings of nearly 2 million kWh per year - that's equivalent to eliminating the annual greenhouse gas emissions from 261 passenger vehicles according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Prior to this project, Georg Fischer Harvel LLC completed heater barrel, compressed air and lighting upgrades that saved a total of 678,359 kWh per year. In the future, the company plans to achieve even greater energy savings by implementing heater barrel upgrades, a plant-wide lighting retrofit and extrusion process chiller upgrades.
